Stepping up to the increasing demand for IP advice, Run Ming has recruited partner Cheng Bing (pictured) to its Beijing office. Prior to accepting the role, Cheng specialised in IP, FDI and corporate governance at Orrick and Jones Day. Qualified to practise law in China, New York and England & Wales, Cheng also has in-house experience with electronics manufacturer OMRON Japan.
When asked why she chose to join Run Ming after her experiences in international law firms, Cheng explained that the firm better suits her professionally. “Taking into consideration the internal management and culture of the firm, I find it easier to blend in and the practice area that I will focus on in Run Ming better suits my specialties,” she said.
But the shift from larger-scale law firm does not come without challenges. “Practising in an international firm, I didn’t have to represent my clients in courts under other jurisdictions and only had to provide legal advice. Shifting to a local domestic firm where representation is required will be a predominant challenge that I will need to overcome,” Cheng said.
With Cheng on board, Run Ming has also enhanced its capability to serve its Japanese clients. Yet the addition of a new partner doesn’t complete Run Ming’s expansion endeavours, which began when the firm added four lawyers to its offices earlier this year: Liang Fei, Yang Lijun, Li Quanhong and Li Hang. But the firm is still keen to expand further. Run Ming is currently recruiting lawyers with IP, capital markets, venture capital and copyright law specialties for the offices in Beijing and Shanghai. It has recently increased the floor space of its Beijing office, which will be officially put into use next month.
