PRC firm Han Kun Law Offices has boosted its capital markets practice in Hong Kong with the hire of two lawyers from Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. Ethle Tang and Tao Li join as partners of Han Kun’s associate firm Miao & Co.

Tang has more than 14 years of experience in advising clients on a range of corporate transactions, in particular, cross-border mergers and acquisitions and securities offerings. She has acted for issuers and underwriters on IPO transactions and has been involved in many first-of-a-kind Hong Kong IPOs, including the first PRC trust company IPO, the first RMB equity offering and the first A- followed by H-listing.

Tang was a counsel at Simpson Thacher prior to her departure. She spent seven years at that firm, and was appointed as counsel in January 2015. Earlier in her career, she had stints as an associate at Linklaters and Stephenson Harwood & Lo (as the firm was called then).

Li, who was an associate at Simpson Thacher, has more than 11 years of experience in Hong Kong capital markets and general corporate matters. She specializes in TMT, consumer, real estate, financial institutions, energy and industrial sectors, and has acted on a number of Hong Kong Stock Exchange listings.

Recently Li advised on the listings of Qeeka Home, Honma Golf, Zhou Hei Ya, JNBY and Zhenro Properties. After starting her career with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Beijing, she joined Simpson Thacher in Hong Kong.

“The arrival of Tang and Li will further strengthen our capability in Hong Kong capital markets and corporate practice,” Han Kun said in a statement.

The hire of the duo continues Han Kun’s streak of luring away top talent from international firms. Early this year, the firm hired Yang Tiecheng, former head of the China financial regulatory practice at Clifford Chance. Last year, Duan Min, former partner and the only counsel in Morgan Lewis’s Beijing office, Li Xiaoming, former head of White & Case’s China practice and Ye Yurong, former counsel with King & Wood Mallesons, all joined Han Kun.

Hun Kun has over 300 professionals in its Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong offices. The firm established its Hong Kong office in November 2014 and now it has about 12 lawyers there, including five partners.
