The Right Honourable Tan Sri Dato' Seri Md Raus Bin Sharif
President of the Court of Appeal
PMN, PSM, SSTM, DMPN, KMN
The Right Honourable Tan Sri Dato' Seri Md Raus Sharif was born on 4 February 1951 in Rembau Negeri Sembilan. His Lordship started his early education at Sekolah Rendah Kg. Astana Raja before continuing his secondary education at Tengku Besar School, Tampin and completing his sixth form at Sekolah Tengku Abdul Rahman (STAR) Ipoh. An alumnus of the pioneer batch of the Faculty of Law, University of Malaya, His Lordship obtained his LL.B (Hons.) degree in 1976 and went on to pursue and obtained his LL.M at the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Science, United Kingdom.
Apart from his academic qualifications, His Lordship comes equipped with a multitudinous experience garnered from his postings as a Magistrate in Pontian, Johor (1976-1977), President of the Sessions Court at Kluang, Johor (1977) and Muar (1978-1979), Deputy Public Prosecutor for the states of Kelantan and Terengganu (1980-1982), Senior Federal Counsel, Ministry of International Trade & Industry (1982-1983), State Legal Adviser Malacca (1983-1986), Senior Federal Counsel, Ministry of Defence (1988), Senior Federal Counsel, Ministry of Home Affairs (1988-1989), State Legal Adviser Kelantan (1989-1991) and Treasury Solicitor (1991-1994).
His Lordship was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner on 1 November 1994. On 12 January 1996 His Lordship was elevated as a Judge of the High Court of Malaya. As a High Court Judge, His Lordship went on to serve in various states including Shah Alam, Muar, Penang and Kuala Lumpur before His Lordship's appointment to the Court of Appeal on July 2008. On 12 September 2011 His Lordship was appointed the President of the Court of Appeal.

Judges
Judging Panel - ALB Malaysia Law Awards 2017
Each year, an independent judging panel of about 40 senior and expert legal industry leaders are selected to review the submission materials. The distinguished judging panel will be selected on the basis of their expertise and knowledge, and will be comprised from various sectors to correspond to the diverse list of award categories. A few featured judges will be released prior to the awards ceremony, and the remaining judges will be revealed on the evening of the awards.
Featured Judges for 2017
Thavakumar Kandiahpillai Thavakumar obtained his LLB (Honours) from University of London in 1989 and was admitted to the English Bar at Middle Temple. He went on to obtain his LLM from University Of London and was admitted to the Malaysian Bar, and became a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Thavakumar practised in Kuala Lumpur as an Advocate & Solicitior becoming a partner in 1998. Thavakumar joined Shell Malaysia in KL in 2000 and served 12 years during which time he held various positions including General Counsel of Shell Malaysia, leading a team of up to 26 lawyers. He was elected President of the Malaysian Corporate Counsel Association in 2011. In 2012, he joined SapuraKencana Petroleum Berhad as VP Legal Affairs and in 2015, he also took on responsibilities as the Head of Group Legal. | |
Dalvin Kaur Dalvin Kaur is currently Regional Head, Legal for Maybank Kim Eng, managing the legal platform for 11 countries under the Maybank Kim Eng banner. With 18 years of experience in the legal industry, prior to her current role she was a Director of Legal with Credit Agricole Corporate Investment Bank, London where she advised on Structured Finance, Capital Markets, Derivatives transactions, Distressed Assets and Islamic Capital Markets. In her practising years, Dalvin was with Allen & Overy and Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, and prior to that, Albar & Partners in Kuala Lumpur. In 2015, Dalvin was named In-House Lawyer of the Year at the Asian Legal Business Southeast Asia Law Awards. Dalvin was a Government of Malaysia scholar for her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) before pursuing her Master in Laws (Banking and Finance), both at King’s College, University of London. She completed her Certificate in Legal Practice at Universiti Malaya. She was admitted to the Malaysian Bar Council in 1998, as well as the Law Society of England & Wales. | |
Mohamed Sufyan Mohamed Mokhtar Mohamed Sufyan is Head of Legal Services at the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM). He is also a qualified Mutual Evaluation Assessor under the Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering and Certified Trainer accredited by the Human Resources Development Fund Berhad. He has more than 23 years of experience in the legal field, beginning with legal practice in Kuala Lumpur & Kuantan. After ceasing practice in 1999, he joined the Securities Commission. He subsequently served in Danaharta, Malaysia’s national asset management agency, established in the aftermath of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Mohamed was educated at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar and London School of Economics & Political Science. He was then admitted as a Barrister-at-Law by the Inner Temple in 1994 and later, as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya, in 1995. |

ELIGIBILITY
How do I know if I am eligible to make a submission?
We highly encourage all firms, individuals and in-house teams to submit, as we have numerous award categories to choose from. We welcome both past participants and newcomers to join the submission for the awards. The full list of award categories and nomination forms can be found at legalbusinessonline.com/awards/Malaysia-law-awards-2017.
Is self-nomination permitted?
Yes, we accept self-nominated submissions. We also accept third-party submissions, should you wish to nominate an external party or vice versa.
Is there a fee required to make a submission in the law awards?
No, there is no fee payment required for you or your firm/team to make a submission.
TIMELINE OF EVENTS
When will the finalists and winners be announced?
The shortlist of finalists will be released around 4-8 weeks prior to the awards ceremony. The winners will be exclusively announced at the awards ceremony on April 6, 2017 in Kuala Lumpur.
When do the submissions open? When is the deadline to submit?
The submissions will open in December. The final deadline to submit will be in February. For any questions relating to submissions and deadlines, please contact Yvonne.Lau@thomsonreuters.com.
NOMINATION PROCESS AND ASSESSMENT
How are the finalists chosen?
Asian Legal Business will compile all of the submission entries, and the ALB editorial and research teams will extensively review each submission to ensure the criteria are met in order to advance to the shortlist of finalists. We stress that this process is fair, impartial and not subject to external influences.
How are the winners chosen?
Once the shortlist of finalists have been announced, an independent judging panel will review and select their top three choices for the award categories they are assigned to. The scores for each award category will be tabulated, and the individual/firm/team with the highest score will be announced as the winner.
Who will be on the judging panel for the ALB Malaysia Law Awards 2017?
There will be an independent judging panel of about 40 senior and expert legal industry leaders to review the submission materials. The judging panel will be selected on the basis of their expertise and knowledge, and will be comprised from various sectors to correspond to the diverse list of award categories. A partial list of judges’ names will be released prior to the awarding ceremony, and the remaining judges will be revealed on the evening of the awards.
What will my contact information/my client’s information be used for?
All contact information provided will not be disclosed to external parties; and will only be seen by our ALB research team and the judges panel. We keep the information on record internally, in case we need to contact you or your client regarding any questions or discrepancies in the submission form.
Where will my name/firm name/team name be published if we are a finalist or winner?
As a finalist and/or winner, your firm/team/individual name will be published in Asian Legal Business awards materials and print magazine. For more information, please contact us.
Is my submission confidential?
Any information you submit will only be reviewed by the ALB team and independent judging panel, whose names will be published. The material submitted will only be disclosed to the above; if there is any information that is strictly confidential, please mark clearly on the nomination form. Though we do our best to maintain the security of the information you provide, any information you transmit to us is done at your own risk and Thomson Reuters is not responsible for any unauthorized transmission of information.
