The UK’s bid to step up relations with China has also nudged European firms into trying out international markets to distinguish themselves from other domestic firms. Rebollo Abogados, a Spanish firm with three partners and seven lawyers, was granted license to operate in China earlier this year and has opened an office in Shanghai in July.

The firm specialises in commercial, international, construction and real estate law and since its establishment has enjoyed mandates from Chinese companies like Zhejiang Zhongneng Industry Group and Taizhou Zhongneng Motorcycle Co.

“Recognising the size and potential of the Chinese markets, we are showing both international and domestic companies that we can assist them in accessing the marketplace. We are also trying to bridge the cultural divide between China and Spain, trying to help Chinese companies make outbound investments in these regions,” said Javier Perez, partner at Rebollo Abogados.

“Our Spanish competitors in China are firms are much bigger and also have greater financial and marketing resources. Therefore we compete on fees. Small and medium sized companies are trying to go international with tight budgets. If we are able to provide the services that they require with similar quality standards to that of a larger firm, no doubt those companies will chose a smaller firm where they get direct access to partners who are in charge of their plans and activities,” said Perez.

Even with increasing competition, the firm remains confident in its stance in China:  “If business continues to go well, we will set up another office probably in Hangzhou or Ningbo,” added Perez.
