Ten firms have been voted the best domestic and international law firms to work for in PRC, according to ALB's Employer of Choice 2010 survey. The online survey was conducted between December 2009 and February 2010 among thousands of lawyers in the country.

Jun He dominated the results, performing the most consistently across all six categories – compensation, quality of work and clients, professional development, reputation, work/ life balance and knowledge management/IT resources. Among international firms in China, JSM and Baker & McKenzie finished ahead of the pack, performing particularly well in the 'quality of work and clients' and 'professional development ' categories.

This year's survey results have shown that employers who can keep lawyers both engaged and motivated in a challenging environment are the ones that have won most favour among associates. The tough environment of 2009 has provided an opportunity for these ten firms to shine.

Another important finding of the survey indicates the inreasing maturity of candidates, who take more than just compensation into consideration when they consider a career move. Many lawyers are now more concerned about the quality of partners and their work and long-term career prospects then purely dollars and cents.

In addition, the results also reflect the closing gap between local and international firms across a wide range of criteria, including organisational structure, quality of work and clients, exposure to top transactions and compensation. The challenging market conditions seen in 2009 undoubtedly hastened this progress. A noticeable number of respondents working at international firms voted for a domestic firm as one of their preferred places to work.
