Troutman Sanders has opened a Beijing office, which will be led by partner Allen Shyu, a lateral hire from the Hong Kong office of Orrick. Insurance and maritime specialist Ronald Sum also joins the Troutman Asia team from Blank Rome.
Troutman Sanders has opened a Beijing office, its third in China. Leading the new branch is office managing partner Allen Shyu, who has joined as a lateral hire from the Hong Kong office of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, and has brought along a team of four senior U.S.-registered securities attorneys with him.
A corporate specialist, Shyu has over 15 years of experience working with clients on Hong Kong and U.S. capital markets deals and regulatory issues, M&As, and private equity matters. He also provides regular counsel to Greater China companies targeting overseas asset acquisitions and investment opportunities.
Fluent in Mandarin, Taiwanese and English, Shyu commented on his move: “This opportunity to expand Troutman Sanders in Beijing was one that I could not pass up. I believe I can contribute to Troutman Sanders’ achievements in China and throughout Asia, where the firm already has more than a decade of success in assisting companies to invest and do business in Asia, as well as assisting Asia-based clients with their U.S. investments and operations.”
In addition to its Beijing launch, Troutman Sanders has bolstered its insurance and maritime practices in Hong Kong with the hire of partner Ronald Sum and his team from Blank Rome.
Sum’s insurance practice will focus on the areas of directors and officers, professional liability, as well as marine property and casualty insurance.
Qualified to practice law in the UK, Hong Kong and Australia, he is the current chair of the selection committee of the International Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, and is an accredited mediator. Sum and his three-member team will be joining Troutman Sanders’ existing litigation group in Hong Kong.
Eric Szweda, the Hong Kong office managing partner of Troutman Sanders, said in a statement: “ With over 20 years of specialisation in insurance and maritime, trade and logistics at leading international firms in Hong Kong, Ronald Sum, a dispute resolution and regulatory lawyer, adds considerable strength to our practice.”
