Energy-focused firm Vinson & Elkins has decided to terminate its eight-year operation in Shanghai, and consolidate its China practices into Beijing and Hong Kong.

Mark Kelly, chairman of V&E, said in a statement that given the firm’s historic ties to the energy industry, concentrating more of its mainland Chinese resources in Beijing, where many of the Chinese energy corporations are based, would make the firm’s service more effective.

“[We] believe that our enhanced capabilities in Beijing and Hong Kong will benefit our clients across the greater China region. As is the case with all prudent international law firms, we carefully manage our practices to ensure their alignment to client needs and the firm’s overall strategic goals,” he said.

V&E will continue running three Asia offices in Beijing, Hong Kong and Tokyo, with a focus on natural resources and international dispute resolution.

“Where possible, we will provide opportunities for attorneys and staff to remain with the firm in the region, though we realise our decision to consolidate may result in the loss of some dedicated and talented people,” said Kelly.

V&E’s Shanghai office, which opened in 2005, will be officially closed later this year after a few months’ transition.
