There is no doubting the vastness of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), or its staggering ambition. A development campaign through which China wants to boost trade and stimulate economic growth across Asia and beyond, the BRI is currently building massive amounts of infrastructure connecting the Middle Kingdom to countries around the globe. Since 2017, the expansion has included transport corridors leading from China to Europe and Africa; continuous flow of FDI to Central Asia, Transcaucasia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East; and the creation of new markets in countries along transit routes.

The implementation of BRI is already resulting in a number of complex and unprecedented issues arising from this international undertaking, including, but not limited to: cross-border issues related to M&A and fiscal regulations, contract models, currency risks, financing arrangements, choice of law and dispute resolution. The ALB Guide to the BRI 2023 will help explain these issues with clarity for the benefit of in-house counsel by compiling in-depth articles written by prominent law firms.
