David Swain, General Counsel, Essex Bio-Technology 48x48, linkedin icon

David is General Counsel of Essex Bio-Technology Limited and its group of companies.

He has a BSc in Biochemistry from Imperial College, an MSc in Entrepreneurship, Science & Technology from the University of Nottingham, an LLB from the University of Law, and a Postgraduate diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice from Oxford University.

David trained and qualified at Simmons & Simmons in London, mainly advising on pharmaceutical/medical device patent litigation.  He was seconded to GlaxoSmithKline where he advised on the sale and purchase of H1N1 vaccine to Ministries of Health in numerous countries in the Middle East and North Africa, and on numerous commercial agreements in the CIS.  David then moved back to Hong Kong to join Deacons to concentrate on non-contentious IP issues.  After Deacons, David joined Lewis Silkin’s Hong Kong office as Partner and Head of Intellectual Property (Asia-Pacific) before going in-house.

David is a member of the various intellectual property organisations including the Licensing Executives Society (LES) where he is a Council Member of the Hong Kong Sub-Chapter and has held various international roles including Chair of the Young Members Congress.

He is dual qualified as a Solicitor in England and Wales and in Hong Kong.

Prior to joining ALB in 2022, Sarah was a news anchor at a major local broadcaster and a host of its flagship current affairs interview programme. 








Ned Lai, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Department of Justice

In 1999, Ned Lai joined the Prosecutions Division as a Government Counsel. His initial training mainly included handling advisory work and prosecutions on general crimes dealt with in the District Court.

From 2002 to 2009, he handled criminal cases concerning private sector corruption investigated by the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Between 2009 and 2011, he managed criminal cases relating to securities, tax, and fraud.

From 2011 to 2015, he served as the Deputy Section Head of the Magistrates Court Advisory (General Prosecutions).

Between 2015 and 2016, he was responsible for overseeing the Section of public order events and cybercrime.

Between 2016 and 2021, he held the position of Section Head of the Appeals (Human Rights) Section, responsible for prosecuting criminal appeals and handling issues involving human rights arising in other prosecution cases.

Between 2021 and 2023, he was the Section Head of the Court of First Instance Advisory Section.

Currently, he is supervising six sections handling advisory work, trial preparation, appeals, etc., concerning criminal cases to be disposed of in higher courts.

Eddy is an experienced ACAMS (Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists) certified compliance professional with over 20 years’ accrued expertise of AML, Regulatory Compliance, Project Management and Operation Optimization. In his current position as Vice President - Legal and Compliance, he leads a team of AML specialists across multiple offices and countries, he has designed the implementation of the company’s AML Program and developed procedures in jurisdictions including Hong Kong, China, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea and the United States.

Eddy has been a key member of pre-opening team for major integrated resorts in Mississippi, Detroit, Macau and Korea with focus on standardizing policies and procedures, developing regulatory controls, budgeting, developing staff and acted as an internal consultant for multiple areas including casino operation, hotel operation and IT/financial controls for the Sarbanes-Oxley program.

Prior to joining the hospitality/casino industry, he was an Analyst/Consultant in the financial industry for companies such as Credit Suisse and JP Morgan & Chase in New York City.

Julian So, Partner, Hauzen LLP 

Julian is presently a partner at Hauzen LLP that heads the Blockchain, Tokenization and Web3 (BT3) practice. He is qualified to practice in Singapore, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom and specialised in securitisation, financial derivatives and structured finance before further specialising in BT3. Concurrently, Julian is also serving as the Group CEO of XBE and non-executive Vice Chairman of COINLLECTIBLES and MARVION.

Separately, Julian also spent more than a decade in the finance industry, holding senior positions in international financial institutions such as UBS, RBS, Morgan Stanley and Mizuho, where he specialized in private and structured finance, securitisation and derivatives. His last held position at these institutions was Head of Asia Fixed Income (Sales and Trading).

Kevin So, a lawyer, building engineer & university lecturer with a unique experience and background in engineering, law, and building. Kevin's professional journey began in major construction companies for infrastructure projects in Hong Kong and Macau. Kevin's passion for law led him to pursue a degree in law and HKSAR Solicitor qualification. 

After practicing law for a few years, Kevin decided to combine his engineering and legal expertise to specialize in construction and engineering law. Matt Bower is a partner in Allen & Overy's Litigation & Investigations team in Hong Kong. Matt advises financial institutions and corporates in connection with internal and regulatory investigations as well as litigation before the High Courts in Hong Kong and England & Wales.

Nick Chan, MH, JP, the Director leading the operations of AALCO Hong Kong Regional Arbitration Centre, is a lawyer with a computer science background and a Partner at international law firm Squire Patton Boggs.  Intergovernmental organization AALCO serves as an important forum for member states to speak for two-thirds of the world's population in deliberating on international law matters that are of common concern. The United Nations recognizes the role and influence of AALCO with a permanent observer seat. The new regional centre, complementing the five existing centres in Asia and Africa, will deploy cutting-edge 'anytime, anywhere, any device' Online Disputes Resolution platform and technology to present great opportunities and tackle challenges. In 2021, the combined GDPs of the AALCO member countries exceeded US$26 trillion.  As the founding Chairman of eBRAM International Online Dispute Resolution Centre, Mr. Chan attended and spoke at APEC Economic Committee’s Osaka “Workshop on Building the APEC Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) Collaborative Framework Pilot” to help together develop/complete an implementation plan for a pilot for an APEC ODR Collaborative Framework for B2B cross border disputes involving Micro Small Medium Enterprise including resolving any outstanding issues concerning the Collaborative Framework/Procedural Rules, addressing administrative details, and identifying prospective ODR providers who would partner with APEC.
