White & Case has lured over former Freehills mining practice head John Tivey to lead its global mining and metals industry group in Asia. Tivey will be based out of the firm’s Singapore and Hong Kong offices.

Mining specialist Tivey has extensive experience in the Asian mining and energy sectors. In addition to being a partner at Freehills for 14 years, he has previously served as in-house counsel for both junior and major mining houses. He has also led transactions in Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines, and has worked with Chinese state-owned enterprises on their Australian investments.

A landmark deal Tivey was recently involved in, was representing Minmetals Resources on its $1.29 billion acquisition of Anvil Mining.

Commenting on White & Case’s newest arrival, the firm’s global head of project finance, Art Scavone said in a statement: “The firm is widely regarded as a market leader for mining work worldwide. We are very pleased to be able to align John’s mining industry experience with our existing international footprint. John Tivey is a terrific addition to our global team, and we are delighted to have him on board.”
