Bird & Bird has hired former Baker Botts Hong Kong partner David Renton in a similar capacity in its international energy sector group and corporate practice. The arrival of Renton marks the eighth partner to have joined the firm’s growing Asian practice, and the fifth for the international corporate team.

Renton specialises in energy and infrastructure projects, and has played an advisory role in the highly-publicised Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge case.

“David’s expertise is an excellent fit for us with his extensive experience in our most rapidly growing sector area,” said Marcus Vass, head of Bird & Bird’s transactional group in China. Vass added that the addition of Renton is in line with Bird & Bird’s ambition to grow its Asian arm to represent 20 percent of the firm in the next five years.

“Bird & Bird’s strong capability in Asia puts them in a good position to take advantage of the growing opportunities here, and their leading expertise in technology gives them the cutting edge in the energy sector, where the focus is increasingly on cleantech and renewable solutions,” said Renton.
