Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has appointed Gang Yuan, a former partner of the now-defunct Dewey & LeBeouf, as its new head of energy and natural resources at its Beijing office. He will be working closely with the rest of the firm’s energy partners in Tokyo, Southeast Asia, and Abu Dhabi.

Yuan is an energy and resources specialist with experience in cross border corporate and regulatory matters. His clients include state-owned Chinese energy entities.

Commenting on the new hire, Asia managing partner of Freshfields, Robert Ashworth, said in a statement: “Gang is a well-respected lawyer with a great track record, especially in the oil and gas industry. As China’s demand for energy continues to grow, Gang will lead Freshfields’ work in assisting our Chinese energy and natural resources clients fulfil their overseas ambitions, from M&A and joint ventures to the development of international energy projects. We have been building out our ENR capability in Asia in response to client demand and Gang’s arrival is another important step in that process.”

Yuan is PRC-qualified and admitted to the State Bar of California in the U.S.
