Mayer Brown JSM has recently beefed up its China offices by recruiting a new partner Betty Tam in Shanghai and a consultant Guoqing Li in Beijing.

Former Herbert Smith Freehills partner Tam has more than 12 years of experience advising on multinationals’ cross-border M&As and foreign direct investment matters in China, including acquisition and divestment of Chinese companies, formation of joint ventures and matters related to their operations, such as corporate governance, employment, foreign exchange and regulatory/compliance matters. She has advised the power, water and waste water treatment utilities, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. She is fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, English and French.

Li is dually qualified in PRC and New York. He was a partner at Chinese firm Jingtian & Gongcheng prior to joining Mayer Brown JSM. He specialises in advising issuers, underwriters on various IPOs on the Hong Kong and the Shanghai/Shenzhen stock exchanges, and corporate clients on corporate finance matters.

“I am pleased to see the expansion of our corporate practice in China at a time when M&A and IPO activities are on the rise. Betty’s and Guoqing’s added capabilities and strong track records will certainly further bolster our already strong practice and provide us with more opportunities,” Elaine Lo, senior partner and Asia Chair of the firm said in a statement.
