One of the first specialist tax law firm, Hwuason Lawyers, has recently hired Australian qualified lawyer Matthew McKee from Lehman, Lee & Xu to join its Beijing office as senior foreign counsel.

McKee, an expert in Australian and international corporate taxation, will advise foreign and domestic clients on Australian and China international taxation.

While the Chinese tax regime continues to evolve in line with business trends, tax practices are set to flourish in 2010“In the past, China’s tax regime was relatively relaxed, given it needed more foreign investments. However, now things have changed – the tax system is undergoing a new round of reform and the State Administration of Taxation is tightening the reins,” said McKee. “Companies and investors are facing more challenges in terms of transaction and corporate structures, while more issues and disputes are arising from this area. So the need for specialised tax legal advice will rise accordingly. ”

Prior to joining Hwuason, McKee worked as a foreign legal counsel at Lehman, Lee & Xu’s Beijing office. He also previously practiced as a solicitor at Australian firm Argyle Lawyers. He has practiced in China for a number of years and also has previous litigation experience in corporate, commercial and equity disputes and in banking & finance securities enforcement.

Hwuason is a specialist tax practice that offers four partners and more than 20 lawyers; the firm plans to open an office in Tianjin within the next few months.
