Dubai, 14 March 2012 – Asian Legal Business (ALB), a Thomson Reuters company, is today relaunching The Brief, a monthly magazine and website designed to provide legal professionals with the hard-hitting news and analysis they need to better understand the trends and business developments in the Middle East’s legal sector.

The Brief, a 40-50 page English language magazine acquired by Thomson Reuters last year, will feature key interviews and regular guest columns from top legal experts as well as special country reports and in-house counsel spotlights. The Brief will also cover the legal opportunities and challenges faced across different sectors throughout the region, issues concerning Islamic finance and sharia law as well as identifying top M&A and private equity deals.

“Our goal is to make The Brief the publication legal professionals turn to in the Middle East. The Brief’s editorial team has exceptional knowledge of the region and will work closely with colleagues across Reuters to bring customers reliable and trustworthy news, along with authoritative and unbiased insight,” commented Andrew Goldner, managing director of ALB.

“As well as being a key source of information for our customers, our regular guest columns along with the Letters-to-the-Editor section will stimulate debate and discussions amongst the region’s legal community.”

Heading the The Brief is Shaheen Pasha, the magazine’s Middle East regional editor. Prior to joining The Brief, Pasha was Islamic finance correspondent for Reuters in Dubai. In addition, Pasha was also assistant professor of journalism at the American University in Cairo, teaching online and print journalism, and has worked at several major news outlets in the region. She has also worked as a banking and legal reporter for CNNMoney.com in New York.

“We anticipate the relaunch to have a real impact, so we spent time building a new team of professional legal journalists, focusing on new content and redesigning the layout,” said Pasha.

Top stories in the March edition of The Brief include how the UAE is pushing for legislative reform as a marketing move, as well as the expected refinancing hurdles faced this year by Gulf Arab companies. This month’s In-House Counsel Spotlight will focus on HSBC Middle East’s Michael Hancock.

Also in the new edition is the first monthly guest column by Diane Hamade, a UAE national, and prominent lawyer, legal consultant and founder of the International Advocate Legal Services in Dubai. Hamade, who is also legal consultant for international legal practice Herbert Smith in Dubai, previously set up the DIFC LCIA Arbitration Centre and worked as legal advisor for the Hawkamah Institute, DIFC.

ALB is a leading provider of print and online legal news and publishes five monthly magazines, including The Brief, that cover Australia and New Zealand, China, North Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

As well as breaking legal news, deals and analysis through its magazines and websites, ALB also hosts the annual Law Awards and in-house legal summits in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Sydney, and beginning this year, in Dubai.
