We want your data! Submission period for the 2015 TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono is now open. Complete the survey here

The TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono is an initiative of TrustLaw, the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s global pro bono service. The TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono looks at how much pro bono work law firms are undertaking on a country-by-country basis around the world and identifies global trends in the pro bono market place.

The information provided as part of the TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono is an invaluable tool to help spread the practice of pro bono around the world by highlighting successful pro bono programmes, providing benchmarks on engagement levels in different jurisdictions and demonstrating the amount of pro bono being done globally. Since the launch of the TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono in 2014, it has rapidly become a central repository of information on the global pro bono sector, uncovering emerging trends and quantifying the complex ways in which the sector is evolving.

Take a look at the results of the 2014 TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono here

What information is collected from law firms?

  • The amount of pro bono work performed in each jurisdiction in which a firm operates
  • Levels of engagement in pro bono matters across the firm
  • The structure of pro bono practices
  • Types of pro bono matters firms are working on

For additional guidance, please see the TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono Definition of Qualifying Pro Bono and the TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono survey questions.

What will be published?

The only information attributable to individual law firms will be the average number of pro bono hours per fee earner per year in each jurisdiction in which the firm operates and the percentage of fee-earners undertaking ten or more hours of pro bono per year.

All of the other information will be collated and either published on an anonymous basis or used to inform the TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono's industry analysis. This includes the structure of pro bono practices, types of matters worked on, whether pro bono is taken into account for compensation of fee-earners and levels of partner involvement.

The TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono will be published on a country-by-country basis, not at a global level. For example, if a law firm based in India completes the survey, the firm will see how they compare to other firms working in India only.

Who can contribute to the TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono?

Law firms in every country across the world are invited to contribute to the TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono, irrespective of their size or experience in pro bono matters.
