The Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA) will hold its 29th Annual Meeting and Conference this year at the Raffles City Convention Centre, Singapore from April 25 to 27. This conference will focus on the theme “Technology, Business and Law – Global Perspectives.” Spread across more than 60 concurrent sessions with over 300 speakers, the event promises a comprehensive examination of the issues and challenges facing practising lawyers across the world.

The piece de resistance of the conference programme lies in its plenary sessions featuring prominent political leaders and leading legal practitioners. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore will speak at the first plenary. His government is a champion of adopting technology to build a smart nation.

The second plenary will focus on the interface between international commercial courts and international arbitration that will be moderated by Chan Leng Sun SC. Speakers include Justice Quentin Loh of the Singapore International Commercial Court, Toby Landau QC, Peter Rees QC and Alexander G. Fessas, the Secretary General of the ICC International Court of Arbitration.

The third plenary will stage a fireside chat with the legendary Prime Minister-in-waiting of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which will be an opportunity to hear Dato’ Seri Anwar’s vision for the future of Malaysia and the region, and to come up close and personal with him.

There will also be a keynote address on the impact of technology on the legal profession by the Chief Justice of Singapore, Sundaresh Menon during the Gala Dinner on 25 April 2019.

Conference delegates from overseas will get to experience authentic local hawker fare and live performances by home-grown talent including local comedian Kumar.

With more than 1,000 lawyers from all over the world already registered, this event is expected to garner the largest attendance ever at an IPBA annual conference. “This will be the third time that Singapore is hosting the annual conference of the IPBA since its inception in 1991. The last couple of times took place in 1994 and 2010. We are confident the conference will offer an excellent platform for lawyers to network with their peers from all over the world and discuss key issues currently confronting the legal profession,” as explained by Francis Xavier, President-Elect of the IPBA.

He added that “Lawyers today are challenged by many unprecedented concerns in an increasingly borderless world. More so now than ever before, lawyers need to collaborate and keep up-to-date to stay relevant in the rapidly changing and dynamic business environment. IPBA and this conference seek to address this need.”
