Winston & Strawn has consolidated its Greater China practice by closing its Beijing office, which opened in 2009, and its Taipei office, launched in 2014.

The Chicago-headquartered firm told ALB that it still has bases in Hong Kong and Shanghai, where its core attorney teams will be transferred.

"This consolidation will allow Winston to operate more efficiently in the region, which in turn will allow us to attract additional talent and offer the services our clients require. The firm remains committed to Asia and is focused on strategic recruiting,” the firm said.

Winston is the latest U.S. firm to scale back in Greater China. As 2016 was closing, Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft said it was packing up its offices in Beijing and Hong Kong, effectively exiting Asia. A year earlier, Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson also departed from the region by shutting down its Hong Kong and Shanghai offices.
