Malaysia was the first ASEAN nation to establish diplomatic ties with China back in 1974, and received ¥266 billion in Chinese investments and contracts between 2005-2017. Malaysia sent over ¥94 million worth of Musang King durians to China earlier this year and is now China’s largest trading partner in ASEAN. Such long term friendship of China and Malaysia was described by Premier Li Keqiang as “unforgettable, like the taste of durian”.

Investment opportunities in Malaysia appear in the digital, logistics, tourism, healthcare, and education industries. These support the five Belt and Road (B&R) cooperation priorities of: Policy coordination; Facilities connectivity; Unimpeded trade; Financial integration; and Cultural exchange.

Dr Huang Huikang, China’s ambassador to Malaysia, has maintained that Chinese regulators remain supportive of B&R deals and the impact from China’s control on capital outflow is likely to be minimal for genuine projects.

Malaysia ranks No.1 within the ASEAN emerging markets in logistics and innovation due to good infrastructure and efficient supply chains such as transportation, financing, insurance, and telecommunications. It’s supportive business environment is powered by skilled, multilingual human capital and is rich in cultural diversity. Perhaps, that is why Jack Ma of Alibaba Group will be setting up its regional hub in Greater KL’s Digital Free Trade Zone (DFTZ). The logistics hub is in close proximity to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which will function as a centralised customs clearance, warehousing and fulfilment facility for Malaysia and the region, to speed up clearance for imports and exports.
